New Zealand’s majestic Southern Alps hold some of the finest Big Game Animals to be found anywhere in the world. Four Seasons Safaris New Zealand offers fair chase Hunting safaris on exclusive privately-owned land where both record book ‘Free Range’ & ‘Game Ranch’ trophies are regularly taken. In addition we personally arrange and guide safaris into the most remote corners of New Zealand and Australia – the choice is yours.
The Himilayan Bull Tahr (Hermitragus jemlahicus) is the undisputed ‘King of the New Zealand Mountains’, inhabiting the highest peaks in the South Island. They are justifiably one of the most sought-after trophy animals in the world. Originally brought into the Southern Alps from their traditional home in highest peaks in the world, the Himalayas, they were released into the wild in 1904 at Mt Cook, New Zealand’s highest mountain.
Like the Red Deer, the Tahr has thrived here, however, its choice of territory isn’t the forest or rolling lands, they prefer sheer rock faces, glaciers and overhanging pinnacle bluff systems. Weighing in at up to 300lbs, it is a sight to behold to see a mature Bull Tahr navigating his way across a seemingly impassable cliff face. Incredibly agile with a broad chest and powerful shoulders and protected against the elements by a thick lion-like mane, they are truly a magnificent sight.
Because of the terrain and the cunning of the Tahr with its ability to literally run across sheer cliff faces, it presents the hunter with a most challenging experience, testing the skills of even the most experienced.
Putting a set of wonderful Tahr horns with its magnificent winter cape on the wall, or full body wall mount is the dream for many, a dream we help our clients realise each season.
Our foot hunting Tahr hunts are carried out on some of the finest Tahr hunting properties in New Zealand. We have 4×4 and helicopter access to our own exclusive private hunting areas, along with thousands of acres of concession land. Access via the use of a helicopter will help save your legs and flying over this spectacular country will become a highlight you will never forget.
The ‘Rut’ for the Bull Tahr is May to July, giving the hunter the chance to bag one of the best hides and neck capes and horns of any feral animal, right in the peak season, and in a truly challenging environment.
We hunt Tahr year round and the bulls sport there dark long winter skins from April – October.
